New healthy things

Now that the wedding is over, it’s good to have things back to normal (although our youngest daughter is getting married in the fall of 2019…..stay tuned for that!)

I took a short hiatus from exercising and healthy eating during the few days leading up to the wedding.  I read all the time about how people “make it work” and are really disciplined about staying on track no matter what circumstances they are in.  Good for them!  However, I decided “ain’t nobody got time for that” and just did the best I could.  But I will tell you that after eating nothing but restaurant food for several days, I was happy to get back to normal, healthy, home-cooked meals!

I’m always open to trying new things that are healthy.  Here are some things that I’ve tried lately that I really love:

  1.  I started drinking a glass of kombucha several days a week, particularly when I get home from work and don’t feel like indulging in a glass of wine.  It’s hard to describe the taste – tangy, bubbly, and a bit sweet is probably the best I can do, but it’s loaded with lots of healthy probiotics!
  2. I’ve cut back on the amount of coffee and am drinking more tea.  I’ve been experimenting with different types of teas and recently discovered that I love African honeybush tea!  It contains lots of healthy antioxidants AND phytoestrogens, which help with menopausal symptoms – WIN!
  3. I’ve started eating smaller, more frequent meals.  It keeps me from getting HANGRY and overeating.
  4. I’ve talked about this a bit in my last post already, but it’s helped so much that I just want to keep talking about it: cutting back on social media and being more conscious about the things I’m following and reading.  Unless it involves cute kids, dogs, nature, healthy recipe ideas, or just inspiration in general, I’ve either unfollowed it or just ignore it. It’s definitely a work in progress, but I’ve noticed that I’m much more content and at peace with myself and my surroundings when I censor my social media use.  And it also cuts back significantly on the “comparison syndrome” and I feel like I’m in a much better place mentally.

I think the most important healthy thing I’ve started doing for myself, though, is letting go of trying to be perfect and I’m just enjoying life by being good to my body and soul.  I wish it hadn’t taken this long to figure it out, but I’m so grateful that I finally did.

  1. I like kombucha too. Just so darn expensive.
    I love this salad dressing (https://www.briannas.com/products/rich-poppy-seed/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwjN7YBRCOARIsAFCb937qyVIazQ1ZQQ_BSBsrneuadDBm0yTlMykPgc-KpS_nc1b6x5aU5XYaArkYEALw_wcB) but it has oil and sugar so I was feeling guilty about indulging in it. Also, I love raisins on my salad but everyone says stay away from dried fruit. Now I’m adding a few raisins and a little of that wonderful poppy seed dressing and celebrating that I’m eating a gorgeous salad with beans, mushrooms, mixed greens, and red peppers instead of McDonalds. LOL

    1. I’m a fan of creamy salad dressings, but I feel like all of the vegan dressings are high in fat, sodium, and sugar. But to me, if it’s a choice between enjoying a salad because I have a good dressing on it versus eating no salad at all? I feel like the dressing is a small indulgence! And I feel like it’s the same with the raisins (I’m not a fan of dried fruit, but I say go for it!) 🙂
