This morning I worked out. Most mornings, I have every intention of working out, but then I talk myself out of it. Most days, it’s not a big deal because then I’ll just work out in the evenings when I get home from work. Lately, however, I’m finding it hard to work out in the evenings, also. There’s something going on, or the weather is really nice and so I sit out on the back patio with a glass of wine.
It’s better to just crank out the workouts in the morning and get it done. For a while, I was doing really well. This past winter, I was suffering from the winter blues and found that working out in the mornings really helped with my mood. And then I just got out of the habit. I really want to get back into the habit.
Here’s the issue: it’s not that I don’t like working out in the mornings. Once I’m up, I have no problems getting motivated to work out. It’s the getting my ass out of bed that I’m struggling with. My alarm goes off and then I just lay in my warm, comfy bed and think of a gazillion excuses about why I don’t need to get up and work out. Sleeping a few more minutes feels so much better. Then by the time I get up, there’s no time for my workout.
I’ve decided to try a couple of things so that I can get into a regular, early morning workout routine:
- Instead of using my phone for an alarm, I’m going to use a regular alarm and set it where I physically have to get out of bed to turn it off. Once I’m out of bed, the warm, cozy feeling is gone, and so I’ll just get up and start my day.
- Set my alarm 15 minutes early. That way, if I do have a hard time getting up, I still have time for my workout. But if I do #1, chances are, I won’t be getting back into bed. (Hopefully!) And then I have an extra 15 minutes in my morning routine! Winning, right?
This will be a goal for August and if it works out well, which I think it will, it will become a healthy habit.
How about you? Do you work out in the mornings and if so, how did you make it a regular part of your daily routine?
May your glass always be full,
