Hello and happy Sunday! How’s the weather where you’re at? We’ve had some very cold temperatures and some additional snow, which we definitely didn’t need.
Today is day 14 of the 75 Hard program and I am really amazed that I’m still sticking with it. When I wake up each morning and see the weather forecast, I just want to crawl back into bed and hibernate until spring, but this program has really pushed me past limits that I didn’t think I could do. We’ve had below-zero wind chills for 9 out of the 14 days so far. I’ve been told I’m crazy, and I’ve also been told to be careful because these cold temperatures can be dangerous if you’re outside for an extended period of time.
Today was the coldest day so far and the wind chill temperature when I went outside for my walk was -24. The meteorologists usually tell us at this point to stay indoors, to keep our pets inside, etc. But I have learned these past 14 days that is IS possible to safely go outside and get a 45-minute walk in without getting frostbite or freezing to death. I have some tips.
Dress in layers and make sure everything is covered as much as possible. I’ve been wearing a hooded sweatshirt under my winter coat. I wear snow pants over leggings and a pair of jeans. I wear merino wool socks to keep my feet warm. I have a fleece neck gaiter and a balaclava fleece hood ski mask to cover my head and face and then I pull up my hood of both my sweatshirt and coat so that my head stays warm. I have a pair of hiking boots that are great for walking in the snow and ice and they keep my feet warm and dry. Finally I have a warm pair of gloves and I insert hand warmers inside. Guys, hand warmers are a GAME CHANGER, as my hands tend to be the part of my body that gets the most cold.
The most challenging part of these daily walks is putting on all of the layers and getting out the door. But once I’m outside and get moving it’s really not that bad. I stay warm enough. It’s not a race, I’m in no rush, so I’m careful to avoid icy, slick spots. I note which direction the wind is blowing and try to avoid walking into the wind as much as possible. I listen to music and that helps elevate my mood and pass the time. There have been times when I’ve actually worked up a sweat; if the sidewalks are clear enough, I can get a good walking pace going. Today was slow going because we had more snow and there were drifts and some icy spots that I had to navigate and some assholes just don’t know how to shovel.
I can’t say that I’m enjoying these walks, but I’m so happy that I’m able to get them done and not feel miserable. Tomorrow will be the last really cold day and then the temperatures are supposed to start getting back up to above zero again. In fact, next weekend it’s supposed to be in the 30’s, and I’m super pumped about that! Less layers and clearer sidewalks! Yay!
In other news, I finished Phase 2 of 9 Week Control Freak and wow, that phase was challenging! I’m kind of scared (but excited) to do Phase 3! But I love the results I’m getting so far. I feel like my muscles have more definition and I feel strong and fit! Eating 100% clean and drinking a gallon of water is really making a difference in my results so far, too. I can’t wait to see my progress at the end of Phase 3 in three weeks!
